A soldier speaks: My lord! The Philistines!

Three Philistines enter. A sword fight ensues. Both of Jonathan's men are slain. Jonathan is left to fight the three Philistines.

JONATHAN: [speaks] Come on!

He is able to kill one but is overpowered and slain by the remaining two.

Shortly after, Saul enters with armor-bearer and looks down upon the body of Jonathan. He falls to his knees and cradles Jonathan's lifeless body. He is consumed with grief.

SAUL: [crying] My son. My son.

SAUL: [regaining composure, sings]

The More I Know

The more I know less time I have
What I had wished is not
What I had feared is true
David will rule this land
And I shall wither like a leaf.

To armor-bearer:

So take thy sword and thrust me
Lest these Philistines thrust
And make a mock!
And I will leave this world
With pride.
Oh God. Why has thou forsaken me?

Saul is stabbed from behind by his armor-bearer.

Saul: [sings] Oh God, guide me, protect me. Make me a brilliant star.

David and his men enter and see the bodies of Saul and Jonathan lying side by side. David falls to his knees, looks up, and appeals to the heavens.

DAVID: Tell it not in Gath, lest the daughters of the Philistines rejoice. The shield of Saul, not anointed with oil. The bow of Jonathan turned not back.

DAVID: [sings]

How Are the Mighty Fallen

Saul and Jonathan
Were noble and courageous
In their lives
Even in their death
They were not divided.

Ye daughters of Israel
Weep over Saul
Who clothed you in scarlet
And other delights
Who put ornaments of gold
Upon your apparel.

DAVID and SOLDIERS: [sing] How are the mighty fallen in the midst of battle!

SCRIBE: And David was 30 years old when he began to reign. And he reigned for 40 years.

Scribe and soldiers kneel before David as final notes are played.
